In fact, retaining top employees can actually be trickier for companies than usual.

1. Narrow your search

Everyone’s circumstances are different. A job search may be a function of desire or necessity. However, when hunting and interviewing for a new job, targeting is key. Reflect on your skills, experience, and interests. Broad job searches can be difficult and time consuming. In addition, recruiters and hiring managers don’t want to hear “I just need a job” or “I am open to doing anything.” 

TIP: Partner with a staffing agency or multiple agencies if you are beginning a job search. 2. Update your resume

Resume writing, updating, and polishing are generally dreaded tasks but absolutely necessary if you are looking for a new role. Your resume oftentimes will get you through the “gate.” Your interview will welcome you through the “door.” So, make your best first impression in the form of writing.

TIP: Try to catch the resume reviewer’s eye. Many individuals scan a resume in a matter of seconds. The eye catches on format, experience, then content. Avoid wordiness and call out numerical accomplishments. Additionally, use a cover letter to connect to the role you are applying for and link your personality, skill, and desire to the organization.

3. Reflect on your experience

As you are applying and interviewing for new roles, you are telling your story – a story of your unique experience. Connect your experience to the role in which you are applying. Some individuals do this by creating several different resumes. However, if your search is targeted, only small tweaks are necessary to your resume. Taking this a step further, begin to think of examples you want to highlight during an interview that speak to your experience and highlight your value.

TIP: Review a job description thoroughly and update your resume before each submission. Why? Many applicant tracking systems have key word capabilities. If a role is calling for a certification, education, platform experience, or bilingual expertise for example – list these on your resume to make it stand out.

4. Network with advocates

Referrals are preferable to many employers over cold candidate sourcing. Referred candidates come from trusted sources – current employees, professional networks, etc. Reach out individuals in your network that work in your field or share your interests. You never know who they might know or what opportunities they may have knowledge of.

TIP: Update your LinkedIn profile and keep it up-to-date. Many recruiters and professional connections rely on your profile to gauge your experience, expertise, interests, education, etc. 

5. Know your worth

It’s tempting to jump at the first offer that comes your way. And, this is not to say that offer isn’t the right one. Especially, if it comes from a company you are excited about. Know your compensation and benefits expectations. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and discuss these topics with your recruiter.

TIP: Compensation and benefits come in different shapes and sizes – salary, bonus, commission, insurance, 401K, tuition reimbursement, remote work, commute time, company vehicle, etc. Your recruiter may ask about your salary and benefit history. Instead of discussing your history, discuss your expectations for your next role.
