What previous experience or qualifications do you have that make you suitable for this position?

This question might seem generic, but it’s important to ask your client services candidates. Ideally, the interviewee should have previous experience with customer service/client support. Additionally, they should be able to articulate this experience in a thorough yet succinct manner.

What is good customer service?

A bit more specific to the field, you want to ask your candidates what their view of a good customer service experience is. Here, you’re looking to assess what the candidate considers quality customer service, and how they would provide it to your customers. A strong candidate will provide specific examples of good customer service either from their own previous work experience or from their personal experiences as a consumer. They should emphasize the important aspects of client services, such as product awareness, efficiency, and attitude.

Tell me about a time that you helped resolve a particularly difficult client issue.

If you want to dig for specifics about their experience, this is a significant question to ask. It gives your candidate an opportunity to reflect about a certain time they may have to had to improvise and think on their feet. It can also show you how prepared they are to tackle potentially difficult clientele in the future.

Name three qualities that make you an excellent customer service provider.

You want to be able to deduce their tangible personality qualities that make them suitable for your position and company. Are they friendly, patient, energetic? Resourceful, independent, and enthusiastic? Qualities like these emphasize their strengths in client services and also help you decide whether or not to hire them. If you hear a lingering silence after asking this question, it may be a red flag.

Discuss a recent experience where you, as a customer, received outstanding service.

It’s important that client services representatives recognize what makes for a great customer experience. Was this interaction worthy of writing a glowing online review? What did the candidate learn from the exchange? Dig deep to discover what stood out from the service, and how the candidate might apply that lesson moving forward.
